Article Title: Travel to Tokyo in your pyjamas – consumer tech trends of 2024
This year’s annual CCEF (California Consumer Electronics Fare) offers another sneak peek into the future of home and consumer technology.
From the next-generation range of smart scales to hyper-realistic VR headsets, here are a few tech showcases we are eager to talk about in this year’s upcoming exhibition.
Weight Smarter, Not Harder
Body weight scales are universal. Common in any bedroom, bathroom, or doctor’s office, the actual scale technology hasn’t evolved much over the last 20 years.
Looking to bring new ideas to the table, Japanese company Electrawaye aims to change our general relationship with scales to promote holistic wellbeing at the center of the product.
SM1, touted as the “next generation of BIA (bioelectrical impedance) technology,” has native app integration with Google Fit, WiFi, Bluetooth, and access to the companion app WellMe, which has seen major traction with over 100,000 downloads in the first 2 weeks of launch.
Lead engineer Satoshi Nakamura talked more about SM1, WellMe, and the vision Electrawaye has moving forward.
“Traditional scales only provide one metric but miss the big picture. It’s easy for users to feel bad about their bodies without getting useful feedback to improve their lifestyle. With both SM1 and WellMe, users can precisely view their weight, muscle mass, and other metrics used by professional fitness institutions.”
When asked about app integration, Satoshi explained, “You can only improve what you know. WellMe and SM1 work in harmony. So if I had a bad Friday and poor sleep, I can see how my weight was affected, and it builds the bridge between context and the data.”
As the Internet of Things continues to skyrocket as one of the biggest consumer tech trends, smart home integration is only set to grow more. Statista reported a spike from 13.8 billion IoT devices worldwide in 2022 to a staggering 18 billion in 2024.
Traveling abroad without leaving your house (in VR)
Interest in learning new languages to impress friends or talk to native speakers is expanding, especially among Gen Z and Alpha social media users. Duolingo, the world’s most popular language learning app, grew by 45% in Q1 of 2024 alone.
In ways to make language learning more immersive, global startup World Backpack has been developing a hyper-realistic virtual reality headset for the last 5 years to allow anyone to enter virtual recreations of popular areas around the globe without leaving your house.
Codenamed “Project BEAM” in a similar way of Apple’s Vision Pro VR and AR augmentation, the focus on natural interaction with native speakers, learning the culture, and understanding how each language is used contextually helps learners grasp key elements of the world they go to.
With the first exclusive public prototype at CCEF, faithful recreations of Tokyo’s Shinjuku and Mitte based in Central Berlin are available to test for visitors.
You can have real-time conversations, play mini-games, read books, enter landmarks and buildings, and much more.
The World’s First Transparent (and Wireless) OLED TV
Revealed at Janmuruiry’s CES 2024 Vegas show, the LG Signature OLED T is back and available to view in person at this year’s CCEF winter show.
Blending into any home decor, the large 77″-inch OLED unit uses the Zero Connect Box, allowing wireless HDMI signals alongside your standard Smart TV apps, including Disney+, Hulu, YouTube, Spotify, and Prime Video.
Using the Zero Connect Box last seen on last year’s LG OLED evo M, LG say you can place the Zero Connect Box within 30 feet of the main unit to allow for a clutter-free environment, with the box itself supporting wireless HDMI signals alongside built-in Smart TV apps using Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and the like.
The first time transparent display technology hits the consumer scene, LG has confirmed that the display will be released later this year and is also giving exclusive discounts to CCEF ticket holders on all TV and audio products.
